| Description |
English: Remains of Explosives Factory at Cligga Point In 1889 the British and Colonial Explosives Company was formed and an explosives factory was built on a 100 acre site at St George's Common, Cligga Head. At its height, 3 tons of nitroglycerine was produced per day. In 1892 the Nobel family bought the works but mothballed it in 1905. It was re-opened during WW2 for the production of munitions.
A poem written by HV Westcott (a young clerk at the works) tells how three workers died in an explosion at the factory in 1902. "Oh mournful fate inscrutable and deep three lives wrapt in an instant sleep one moment toiling in the little shed next hurled in fragments o'er the sandy bed..."
