Title |
reliquary hinge strap |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy binding strip from a box, casket or reliquary. Rectangular in shape, measuring 51mm in length and 6mm in width. It is triangular in cross-section, the back face is flat. The complete terminal has a circular perforation through its centre, measuring 2mm in diameter. Above this there are two parallel triangular shaped faceted notches. Two more parallel pairs of these triangular faceted notches occur near to the incomplete end of this object too. The front face is decorated with two parallel rows of ring and dot motifs. Inbetween each pair of triangular faceted notches there is also a ring and dot motif. The incomplete end of this object is curving backwards and when complete would have curved over into the other identical arm of this hinge strap. Almost identical, although complete, hinge straps have been discovered in Winchester and are they are dated to the late 11th and early 12th centuries (Biddle 1990, 776-777, fig 223, no 2380, 2381). |
