Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Three-sided tripod base with relief representations. Pentelic marble. Found in Athens. One side of the base has a depiction of Dionysus, the god of wine and patron of the theatre, holding a ‘kantharos’ and a ‘thyrsus’. Each of the other two sides has a winged Nike. The base supported a bronze votive tripod dedicated by a ‘choregos’ victorious in a drama contest. The figures are attributed to the workshop of Praxiteles on stylistic grounds. 350-325 B.C. Accession number: 1463. Nationaal Archaeological Museum of Athens. Athens, Greece. Text: Museum inscription.
