Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Relief model of Scotland This unusual feature near Barony Castle represents the topography of Scotland within a circular enclosure about 50m across. The photo shows the east coast.

For more on the history and background, please see http://www.makers.org.uk/place/Maczek.

I'm indebted to Keith Burns for the following information on the history of this model map:

"Jan Tomasek (wartime colleague of General Maczek) owned a floor of Black Barony, then eventually bought the whole place. He proposed the model as a tribute to Scotland’s hospitality to Maczek’s soldiers during WW2. He wanted the model completed in time for his “name day” on 24 June 1975. The scale was 1:10,000.

Kazimierz Trafas was the designer and the team was made up of colleagues of Trafas from the cartographic group of the Jagellonski University in Cracow. A wooden small-scale model made in Poland in 4 demountable sections for transport to Scotland.

The big model at Black Barony was opened with a bottle of whisky on (model)

Ben Nevis on 24/06/75. Built in 7 weeks (!) Started 9 – 10 May 1975, opening celebration 24th June, model tidied up 27th June."
