| Description |
Queen of the Night, Harrisia jusbertii, blooming in my yard in Tucson, AZ on the night of 13 May 2007. These flowers are open only for a single night. I sat in ambush until 3 am hoping to catch a pollinator in the act, but nobody showed. Neither of the flowers set fruit, so I probably didn't miss much by not staying up all night. Thanks to Melody Peters who gave me a piece of her queen of the night several years ago. It took a while for it to get big enough to start flowering, but once it did, it turned into a major event to look forward to each year. I'm going to miss it. |
