Three years ago theywere scarcely on speaking terms, and both the British HeirApparent and his charming Consort were even the objects ofgreat discourtesy on the part of their nephew when theywere in the Prussian capital at the time of the late Emperorsfuneral. One of the most interesting personalities at the PrussianCourt is Princess Frederick Charles, who lately accepted thePresidency of the German Womans Department of theWorlds Fair at Chicago. She is the widow of the celebratedcavalry general, who played so prominent a part in the warsof 1864, 1866 and 1870.

He used to be known as the Red Prince, in consenv*enceof the hussar uniform which he invariably wore, and was thetype of the cavalry leader of the olden times—that is to say^swaggering, blustering, loud-voiced and exceedingly brusqueand abrupt in his manner. He presented a striking contrastin every way to his wife, who was, and who still is, a singu-larly beautiful woman. The couple lived unhappily with oneanother. Stories of the Princesss maltreatment by her hus-band were very frequent at one time, and only ceased when,after bearing him seven daughters, she finally gave birth to anardently wished-for son. The Princess became a widow about six years ago andrecently contracted a second marriage, of a morganatic char-acter, with one of her chamberlains, a mesalliance which gavegreat offence at Court. She can, however, afford to be veryindependent, as she is immensely rich, and whenever anythingoccurs at Berlin w
