The radial nerve, which is abranch of the musculo-spiral nerve (page 360), is in relation to the outerside of the radial artery in the middle third of the forearm only. Aboutsix centimetres, or two and a half inches, above the wrist the radial nervepasses under the tendon of the supinator longus muscle, to be distributedto the back of the hand (Plate 47, Fig. 1, No. 16). Above the wrist, in the pulse-area, the radial vessels are often tortuous(Plate 46, Figs. 1 and 2). The line of reference for the radial arterymay be drawn from the middle of the bend of the elbow to the ulnarside of the styloid process of the radius, or, for all practical purposes, anincision made parallel to the radial border of the forearm and two centi-metres, or a fingers breadth, from it will expose the sheath of the radialvessels.
