La refracción astronómica se debe a las distintas capas atmosféricas, más densas cuanto más cerca de la superficie terrestre, y hacen que el rayo del astro se eleve o se desvíe de modo vertical de su posición real. Este rayo de luz se va acercando a la normal de cada capa hasta llegar al ojo del observador.

Será mayor esta desviación o refracción cuanto el astro esté más cerca del horizonte e irá disminuyendo hacia el cenit o posición de 90° es decir encima de nuestras cabezas. De esta manera las constelaciones se desfiguran en dirección vertical y más aún cerca del horizonte pareciendo más chatas que cuando están “más altas” en el cielo.
