Summary

[edit]
Description

Pond within the McIntyre Wild Area, Loyalsock State Forest, Lycoming County.

The area wasn't always so wild; it was mined for coal in the nineteenth century, with miners and their families living in the mountaintop town of McIntyre. The town is long gone; the cemetery remains, along with a few ruins hidden in the woods.

Some evidence of mining remains, including culm banks and grassy, overgrown roads. Small, shallow mine pits are common; many have filled with water, forming ponds such as this one here.
