Description

The Ex Etonian Brexit opportunities minister, Jacob Rees-Mogg, recently told LBC that "we need to be thinking about extracting every last cubic inch of energy from the North Sea." Rees- Mogg also described fracking as " an interesting opportunity" and in January he defended the expansion of the Aberpergym colliery in Wales. Challenged by Green Party MP, Caroline Lucas, he declared

"Net zero is by 2050. We are not at 2050 yet," he said. "We are going to need to have fossil fuels for the interim period and we are going to need coal for things like heritage railways and so on."

Rees-Mogg's logic defies the latest IPCC Climate Mitigation Report which stresses that the window of opportunity for preventing a climate catastrophe is rapidly diminishing. Despite this warning, the UK government is now committing itself to expanding North Sea oil and gas production. A potential disaster for the climate and, by failing to invest in the future, a colossal economic mistake.

On Sunday 10 April, Extinction Rebellion climate change activists marched through London for a second day of protests which included sit down blockades of Vauxhall and Lambeth Bridges. On Lambeth Bridge a group of doctors and nurses refused to leave and were arrested by police.

According to the group website Doctorsforxr.com, 'Doctors for Extinction Rebellion is a doctors' collective who, appreciating that climate change is an impending public health catastrophe, have decided to undertake civil disobedience with Extinction Rebellion.
