English: Reed cutting in progress The reed bed seen in the foreground has already been cut and the workers have laid planks down to the river bank from where they set across in their boat to cut the reeds on the other side.
The reed beds on both sides of the River Waveney are harvested, the reeds are being used for thatching. When the water table is low the workmen are able to access the reed beds on foot. They use a boat to get to the other side of the river and for transporting the bundled reeds from there onto the dike along which the footpath runs, from where they can be picked up by a car or a tractor. |
