35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Psittaciformes; Family: Psittacidae; Genus: Ara; Genus species: Ara chloroptera. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 90 cm; Identification: The red and blue macaw is deep crimson red color with rows of red feathers on its bald, white face. The wings are green and blue, and the rump and back are light blue. The tail is red but tipped with blue; Habitat: Tropical lowlands; Diet: Herbivore: fruit, nuts; Reproduction: In the north, red and blue macaws mate in February. Southern birds mate in November. Females lay three eggs which are then incubated for 27 days. The chicks leave the nest 90-100 days after hatching; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: This species is often confused with the scarlet macaw.
