| Description |
English: (1 in a multiple picture set) I could find little in the way of history about Red Mountain. I found some references which indicate that the town came into being when silver was discovered there around 1900. This is exceptional when you remember that the Yellow Astor mine just north was a gold bearing area. Red Mountain was one of many small towns which existed in the Rand Mining District northwest of Barstow, CA. A productive silver mine was found there in 1919, and called the 'Rand Mine,' which is confusing since it was not in Randsburg. Tungsten was discovered in nearby Atolia. So there were a lot of different minerals in the area. |
