Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Red Lodge, plaque for Mary Carpenter Mary Carpenter was an early social reformer whose ideas influenced the treatment of young offenders. Her father was a Unitarian minister in Bristol. She began as a governess but the plight of street urchins caught her attention and she started a 'ragged school'. In 1851, after studying the problem in other countries, she published an important essay on reform schools and called a conference in Birmingham to debate the institutional care of young offenders. In 1854, after the premises were purchased for her by the Dowager Lady Byron (widow of the poet), she started a reformatory here 'for the purpose of rescuing young girls from sin and misery and bringing them back to the paths of holiness'. She died in 1877 but the reformatory continued until 1918. See http://www.infed.org/thinkers/carpenter.htm
