Summary
[edit]DescriptionRed House Lake from Administration Building, Allegany State Park, New York - 20210316.jpg |
English: The resplendent Red House Lake as seen from the sloping front lawn of the Allegany State Park Administration Building on a March 2021 evening. A 110-acre lake that's the product of the 1930 damming of Red House Brook, the lake was one of three artificial ones to be created in the first decade or so of Allegany State Park's existence, as - quoting from Paul T. Lewis and Bob Schmid's tome The Legends and Lore of Allegany State Park - "it soon became clear to the park administration that a place where day trippers or campers could go to swim, boat or fish was needed". The lake is located on top of what was once the village of Red House, first settled in roughly the 1860s and vacated in 1921 upon the founding of the park. |
