Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Ivy is proving to be a magnet for a whole nest of wasps at the moment but I was surprised to see a butterfly feeding on it in the middle of November. My little book of butterflies tells me that this variety flies between May and October and overwinters but they are unlikely to see the Winter through. It seems we are repopulated each Spring by migrants from Europe. The warmest October on record seems to have extended their flying hours somewhat this year as well.

Can anyone tell me why this bright orange butterfly is called a Red Admiral? They apparently prefer to feed on Nettles but, trust me, my wife does not allow any of those in our garden. I'll have to have a word with the neighbours. As ever I have to state I am not a wildlife photographer just a photographer of beautiful images that sometimes include wildlife. I particularly liked the sharpness of the Ivy flower against the bokeh of the Ivy leaves. I hope you do too.

BTW thanks to 'QI' (the TV programme) I can now tell you why it is called a Red Admiral and not an Orange one. It is because the name pre-dates the arrival of the orange in Britain. Until then the colour we call orange was just seen as another shade of red.
