Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 18-24 cm; Weight: 41-70 g; Identification: The male red-winged blackbird has black feathers with a bright red patch bordered by yellow on the wings. The female blackbird is brown with white upperparts and streaked underparts; Habitat: Wetlands; Diet: Omnivore: seeds, insects; Reproduction: Blackbirds can have 2-3 broods in one year. Each brood contains 3-6 eggs, which are incubated for 10-12 days. The chicks fledge by 14 days of age; Social Structure: Red-winged blackbirds are strong fliers that will often migrate in flocks of a thousand or more. Roosting is often communal, resulting in large, centralized populations. They are largely diurnal, spending most of their day foraging; Status: No special status.
