Summary
[edit]DescriptionRed-billed Hornbill, Tockus erythrorhynchus, at Loodswaai Nature Reserve, Gauteng, South Africa.jpg |
English: It was late, 6:30 PM and heading for dark, the sky was heavily overcast and it was drizzling. There was very little light, but I took the photos anyway as the hornbill was flying up into a tree where it had a nest, carrying a mouthful of mud made possible by the fresh rain.
The reason for the mud is that when incubating eggs, the female is confined in a tree hole that is blocked off with a plaster of mud, droppings and fruit pulp. There is only one narrow opening, just big enough for the male to transfer food to the mother and the chicks. |
