Description
English: CLASSIFICATION: Mammal, Cercopithecidae

HABITAT: Primary and secondary rainforest; up to 1,000 m high. THREATS: Habitat destruction, hunting, poaching. DIET: Fruits (>60%), seeds (>20%), leaves, flowers, mushrooms, insects, nuts. ECOLOGY: Multiz-multif, solitary. Fission-fusion. Group size: 17 - 75 ind.

Red-Capped Mangabeys are diumal, arboreal and terrestrial (40%) animals. They are generally in the lower layers of the forest and descend to the ground to forage or to escape when surprised. They generally live in groups of several males and several females but can also temporary associate with other groups to form a supergroup of up to 75 individuals.

Their sexual maturity is around 32 mo. and the age at first birth is around 54 mo. with a birth interval of 19. mo.

Their characteristic "A-OU" vocalisations are used to keep the group in contact and signal their position.
