| Description |
The rampart consisted of a terrace (agger) surmounted by a parapet and towers. The terrace was built up with packed earth extracted from trenches. It was protected by a wooden barrier and constituted the core of the rampart. Mounds of turf formed two walls, exterior and interior. The turf's natural root system helped solidify and adhere the mound. The towers were spaced one every 18 - 20 m. They rested on a square of four supporting wood posts set about 3 m apart. The two front posts were solidly planted in the packed earth of the terrace. |
