| Description |
In the plain, two trenches were the first obstacles positioned in front of the contravallation line. At the moment of the siege (late summer - early fall) the first and the widest was filled with water channeled from a stream, while the second was dry. The next obstacle was a 14 - 17 m wide glacis followed by two types of trap. First came the stimuli, metal goads embedded in short stakes planted in the ground and arranged in six rows in a staggered formation; A third, apparently dry, trench bordered the foot of the rampart. |
