After a pleasant voyage on the steam-ship Minnesota we were given in Japan the same warm wel-come that we had always had there, and Mr. Taft and Iwere entertained at the Shiba Detached Palace, one of theImperial residences. We lunched with the Emperor andalso with Prince Fushimi, and we met the admirals and thegenerals who had won such distinction in the Russo-JapaneseWar. These included Admiral Togo and Field MarshalPrince Oyama. It was explained to Mr. Taft by the CourtChamberlain that we were regarded as personal guests ofthe Emperor.
