as a student atBryn Mawr College and she went in to Philadelphia to dosome shopping. Among other things she had to get herselfsome shoes. At the shoe store she was waited on by a girlwho was anything but intelligently attentive. She had triedHelens patience considerably by suggesting in a certainnagging way that her superior knowledge of what was beingworn deserved respect, and that Helen didnt know whatshe wanted anyhow. Helen selected some shoes and decided to have themcharged to me, and she thought what a satisfaction it wasgoing to be to reveal her identity to the patronising andoffensive young person. The young person produced padand pencil to make out the check. Please have them charged to Mrs. William HowardTaft, said Helen with what I am sure was her loftiest air. Address? 363 RECOLLECTIONS OF FULL YEARS Washington. The salesgirl held her pencil poised over the pad and withthe familiar expression of satisfaction over a sale accom-plished said pleasantly: D. I had always had thesatisfaction of knowing almost as much as he about thepolitics and the intricacies of any situation in which he foundhimself, and my life was filled with interests of a most un-usual kind.
