I think the heat must have been affectinghim for he called the Naval Lieutenant, who was in chargeas usher, and made audible protest against those wives ofclerks being put before him and his wife. The youngnaval officer was polite, but quite firm in his refusal to takeany steps to remedy matters. You dont seem to know who I am! he exclaimed, withmanifest indignation. No, sir, I do not, mildly replied the Lieutenant. Well, said the angry man, Im a member of the Mili-tary Committee of the House of Representatives. I helpedto make this Army out here and Ive come out to see whatkind of work I did. I dont like it, and Im going home andunmake it. This treatment of me here is of a piece with thetreatment Ive received ever since Ive been in these islands. This didnt sound quite fair. He had been treated with marked courtesy by everybody and had accepted rather lavish hospitality from both Army officers and civil officials. In 208

It seems thatboth General Barry and General Davis saw him and tookpains to go down and ask him up into the central pavilion,but he refused to go. Then one of the guards came up andpolitely informed him: Orders, sir, youll have to standback. By this time he was infuriated and he turned on theguard and, after identifying himself, repeated his remarksabout having made the Army and being determined to goback to Washington and unmake it.
