On its shores onehears much about the typhoon season and the changing mon-soons, and bad sailors would, no doubt, like to have theirsailing dates determined by the Weather Bureau; but thisis not always possible. The Kasuga Maru, on which we made the voyage fromYokohama to Manila, lay in Hongkong Harbour whileone of the great mid-August storms tore up from the southand set skippers and seamen agog with fears of dreadfulconditions we would have to meet on the trip across toManila. In the China Sea there are cross-currents whichmake for bad going at the best of times, and when theyare piled up by a typhoon into great, warring waves theresult is likely to be extraordinary.
