to keep an able-bodied man drunk for half a day.^ * ^ They got sick, many of them went into the hospitaland some died there. **One of the saddest incidents in the life the writerwas his experience with poor Rulon Gray of Chester,Pennsylvania, a big, strong fellow, about twenty yearsof age, who had gone down to Brazil on the City ofRichmond and was stranded in Para. He took typhusfever in malignant form, was sent to the hospital and,on the last visit paid him, was yellow with the diseaseand the picture of death itself. The steward said hecould not live, and the writer promised to see himagain next day. On calling they said he was dead andburied. This could not be credited and investigationshowed that his body had merely been placed in themorgue for burial in the potters field. Remonstrancewas of little use unless accompanied by some offerto provide for the interment, but this was quickly made ^ The best quality of cachaca sold for 25 cents a gallon, or itsequivalent in Brazilian money.

AN ILL-FATED EXPEDITION 403 and Grays body, which had merely been sewed in awhite sheet, was transferred to a neat cofifin, a burialpermit obtained from the authorities for interment inthe English section of the cemetery, and there, attendedby one coach, containing two persons, poor Gray wasburied, and the key to the coffin sent to his parents inChester. The steamer finally came and all the poor fellowsin Para were taken on board for New York, where theyarrived, after a voyage of about ten days, and disem-barked in the month of January, a sorry looking crowd,most of them attired in the lightest of summer clothingand many wearing straw hats and linen dusters inmidwinter. Eeturning to San Antonio, we find that, soon afterthe departure of Mr. Nichols, Mr. G. W. Creighton,with two other engineers and about twenty Indians,was sent to collect camp equipage, left at various placeson the river. During this trip he had occasion to stopall night at La Concepcion and thus describes his visit. As
