Summary

[edit]
Description

Neal read two sections. I'm about half way through the book, which I like, although it isn't quite the challenge of his last book, Anathem. Most interesting was the Question and Answer session afterwards.

My favorite question of Neal: What are you writers doing to address lack of technical innovation? Answer (roughly):There is a project [Project Hieroglyph] taking shape now to get SF writers to write techno-optimistic stories - a throwback to the Golden Age. There was incredible innovation in the first 2/3 of the 20th century, and then technical and scientific stagnation [innovation starvation] - almost nothing new except the Internet. The project is to generate science-fiction that may drive innovation. There are two rules: 1. No Hackers 2. No Hyperspace (no breaking current laws of physics) The idea is to give scientists and engineers ideas that will get them innovating: "If I start on something today, maybe it will exist by the time I retire" [This quote came from someone at Microsoft Research]

Hieroglyph Theory: "Good SF supplies a plausible, fully thought-out picture of an alternate reality in which some sort of compelling innovation has taken place. " which then can help drive real innovation
(See the post Innovation Starvation - there is much more to this than my poor summary)
