| Description |
English: A resplendent 'Castle' at Reading in 1948. View westward, towards Swindon, Bristol etc.,etc., from the Down main platform of an Up stopping train headed by a 'Castle' fresh from repair at Swindon Works. As it is just after Nationalisation of the Railways, No. 5018 'St Mawes Castle' (built 7/32, withdrawn 3/64) has a 'W' prefix that it would soon lose after it was decided that ex-Great Western locomotives would be distinguished by not being given five-digit numbers - as were all ex-LMSR, -LNER and -SR engines. |
