English: Erecting a locomotive at Piha, for use on the Piha Tramway. This is locomotive A62 (0-4-0T type). The manager of the Piha Mill stands in front of the locomotive, with four unidentified men standing on the running board. Taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1915 and 1916.
Original print in album PA1-q-102, page 5 "A" 62 was built by Dubs in 1873 (maker's no. 656/73), and went into service in January 1875 at Christchurch and Timaru. She was transferred to Wellington in 1897, and six years later was loaned to the New Zealand Railways Maintenance Branch for working the quarry at Pencarrow, Wellington, and in 1906 was purchased by the Maintenance Branch. In 1914 she was sent north to the Stores Branch sawmill tramway between Piha and Whatipu, and five years later returned to the Newmarket Workshops for shunting duties. Borrowed by a sawmilling company near Rotorua in 1921, and finally written off in 1926. See "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer and W W Stewart. |
