When the voltage graduallyrises and falls it gives rise to currents that correspond to a truesinuscurve. On account of cheapness of transmission, alternatingcurrents are usually produced by a dynamo. A closed circuitrotating between the poles of a magnet induces an alternatingcurrent, producing a complete cycle for each revolution. Bymeans of a transformer, alternating currents of any desiredvoltage may be obtained from the original current and the alter-nating current may be converted into a direct current by a suitableapparatus—the convertor. The sinusoidal currents are preferredfor the therapeutic purposes when a deeper action of the currentis desired. They cause deep muscular contractions, especiallydeep structures, which are painless, and they are also recom-mended in the treatment of muscular atrophies, as exercise, andin rheumat
