Mirror background. (Corner cracked.) Height, 33 inches; width, 24yo inches. 213—A Garden Party On the left is a Chinese house with doors open upon itsporch, which has an elaborate railing decorated with jarsof plants, and other buildings extend across the garden,one of them reached by a bridge over blue water. Thebranches of trees overhang the roofs, and the backgroundbetween them is a mirror. A mirror also is seen within thehouse. On the porch two young women are playing goand an attendant is about to sexve them with tea, and aboutthe garden are numerous other figures. The costumes areof beautiful and various colors, and the colors in the build-ings are equally brilliant and characteristic. (Cracked.) Height, 39 inches; length, SSi/g inches.

214—The Boys and the Rooster Two boys out for play in a garden are trying to get upa cock-fight with only a single rooster. The bird doesntknow whether to be game or not, as they taunt him withthe cockscomb flower, but he is ready for emergencies ashe spreads his feet, ruffles his neck-feathers and lowers hishead, gazing with pugnacious inquiry at the flower. Theboy holding it is in pink trousers and blue coat. Hiscompanion, who seeks to add to the cocks confusion andirritation by dangling a pine branch before him, wearsblue trousers and a gorgeous mandarin coat of vermilionand gold. The garden is a place of beauty, beside a body ofwater in active motion. Grasses and bushes grow aroundrocks in the foreground, and trees at the w^aters edge, andon the right the rock peony is in bloom. The back is or-namented, in brown, gold and green lacquer, with a displayof peaches growing, bamboo trees, bats, the narcissus, andchrysanthemums. (Unfortunately, two corners of theglass are cracked.) He
