160—Chun-yao Ixcexse Holder (Sung) Globular, on three archaic and rudimentary animal-headfeet; the wide mouth guarded by a metal rim. This pieceof heavy early pottery is coated with a beautiful bluish-moonlight glaze—a clair-de-lune sifted over with the fairesthue of the Persian turquoise—boldly and intricatelycrackled, and flushed with fleeting mottlings of a dulled andpurpled red. The glaze covers both the exterior and the in-terior of the vessels. On two sides of the shoulder, handlesrudimentary or vestigial appear in modeling beneath theglaze. Teakwood cover, pierced in ju-i scepter-head formand surmounted by the sitting figure of an arhat carved inthe round in mutton-fat jade, as a knob handle. Carvedteakwood stand. Diameter, 6%^ inches.

Grayish porcellanous stoneware, witha clair-de-June glaze varying from blue to grayish tint,crackled on both inner and outer surfaces, and marked bypurple flamhe splashes centered with brownish notes.
