s pictured here, holding up his basketof flowers and followed closely by a boy attendant. Hisrobes of pale blue, vermilion and greenish-gray are boun-teously embroidered in gold. The robes of rose and lightgray of his attendant show flowers touched with silver, andon his back he carries a bundle of garlands. A pine tree oftwisted trunk is behind the group, its branches extendingoverhead, and in the background is a stream with a farthershore of hills and ravines under a gray sky. With its com-panion. No. 199 of the catalogue, one of a set of the eightTaoist immortals, or Pa Hsien. Both this painting and itscompanion, while the work of a Chinese artist—none othercould approach the embroidery or the hair—reveal a closestudy of European art in the use of perspective as the Westunderstands perspective, in the landscape background. Andthe influence of the study has not been wholly without effectin the rendering of the human features. Height, 28 inches; width, 22i/4 inches. (Illustrated)
