The True Meaning of Christmas for the Rapid City, South Dakota USDA Staff The Rapid City service center includes staff from Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Farm Service Agency (FSA), and Rural Development. Three years ago, the Rural Development staff contacted the Cornerstone Rescue Mission and WAVI to provide information on the various programs. At that time, the staff decided to forgo the typical interoffice gift exchange and set up the first Angel tree. The first two years, gifts were provided to the families seeking assistance from WAVI (Working Against Violence, Inc.). Every year, the Rapid City Club for Boys finds sponsors to provide a Christmas for a family who would otherwise be unable to celebrate Christmas. This year, the group decided to sponsor a family of six through the Club for Boys. The second to the youngest, is a 7-year old boy who lives in a family of women; four sisters and his mother and is a member of the Club for Boys. The boy’s mother works at a minimum wage job and is a full-time student in college. Since the children range in age from 5 – 18, it has been difficult to make ends meet. The office staff purchased toys and one outfit for each child. Mom was not forgotten as she received a gift certificate. Also provided was a laundry basket full of everyday items such as tooth brushes, bath wash, toothpaste, shampoo, Q-tips, laundry detergent, dish towels, wash clothes and other personal care items. Each family member was provided a stocking with goodies. Mom’s stocking included a gift certificate for an oil change provided by Firestone Car Care Center, $25 gas gift card, $60 gift card to Olive Garden and gift cards to Pizza Ranch. The employees bought an artificial Christmas tree and provided lights and decorations. In addition, the group provided funds for the families’ Christmas dinner. Many of the staff members understand the difficulty and hardship that is faced by those in need at this time of year. This is their way of celebrating the true meaning of Christmas, to bring comfort and joy to the families of Rapid City, SD. |
