[edit]
Description
English: The Ranganthaswamy temple is a Vaishnavism Hindu temple in Srirangapatna, South Karnataka India.

The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu in his Ranganatha form. It is one of the five important pilgrimage sites along the river Kaveri. This Srirangapatna temple is the first temple upstream, the deity is therefore called Adi Ranga. The town of Srirangapatna derives its name from the temple is located on an island in the river Kaveri.

The temple is linked to major Indian thinkers, particularly the Vedanta and Sri Vaishnavism philosopher Ramanuja. However, the temple is older than the 11th/12th century Ramanuja. The temple houses monastery cells as well as manuscript bandara.

The temple features a major gopuram (spire in Dravidian style). The avatars of Vishnu such as Narasimha, Vamana, Rama and Krishna are all featured his prominently. Bhakti movement's Alwar saints are also reverentially displayed.
