NEW YORK TO TARRTTOWN. 45 name is the bequest of the ancient family of Dobbs (Dobb—hisferry, says Mr, Sparrowgrass), who whilome farmed and feiriedthe contiguous land and water. As early as 1698 there lived hereor hereabouts a Jan Dobs and his wife, who were members of thenow venerable old church in Sleepy Hollow. The village covershill and dell, rising charmingly from the river shore to the crestsof lofty ridges, and is planted thick vrith sumptuous homes. Thereis one summer hotel, the Glen Tower, whose yellow front andfine grounds overlook the river below the station, and a boarding-house or two; but none of the villages in this part of the countryare resorts, being composed almost wholly of those who ownand occupy their premises the most of, if not all, the year.
