TheWashington St. Tunnel trainsstart at Sullivan Sq. inCharlestown and run on an ele-vated structure to North Sta-tion; they then dip underground, and when they havepassed under the main part ofthe city, emerge to run elevatedagain through Roxbury to For-est Hills. Many surface carsenter the subway at NorthStation to see dayHght againonly after passing under thecity to Pleasant St. or BoylstonSt. Some of the surface cars,after passing through the sub-way, run up on to the elevatedstructure and continue overthe Viaduct to East Cambridgebefore returning to the surface.The Cambridge Tunnel holds close to one line of travel; buteven this comes out of Beacon Hill to cross Charles St. on anelevated structure and goes over Cambridge Bridge on a levelwath the surface cars.
