Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ramsgate station The present station at Ramsgate was opened by the Southern Railway in 1926. Its purpose was to replace the three stations that until then somewhat over-served the town. This situation was a result of the rivalry between two competing railway companies (the South Eastern and the London Chatham & Dover) each of whom sought predominance in the area in the nineteenth century. The stations in question were the LC&D station (Ramsgate Harbour) and the two SE stations (Ramsgate Town and St Lawrence). By building a one-and-a-half mile link between the two systems, the Southern was able to close all three stations and open its new one near the site of St Lawrence. The only disadvantage of this rationalisation was that the new station was over a mile away from the main part of the town.
