Português: O Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói localiza-se no Mirante da Boa Viagem, no bairro de Boa Viagem da cidade de Niterói, estado do Rio de Janeiro, no Brasil. Projetado pelo arquiteto Oscar Niemeyer, o MAC tornou-se um dos cartões-postais de Niterói.

Edificado em 1996, destaca-se na paisagem pelo arrojo de seus traços contemporâneos, que o fazem assemelhar-se a um cálice ou a disco voador. Foram necessários cinco anos para erguer a estrutura de quatro pavimentos, inscrita numa praça de 2.500 m².

Estudante no início da década de 1960, olhei para o trabalho de Niemeyer como um estímulo, analisando com cuidado os desenhos de cada novo projeto. Quarenta anos depois, ele ainda tem o poder de nos surpreender. O Museu de Niterói é um bom exemplo. Posicionado no promontório rochoso como uma planta exótica, ele despedaça o convencional justapondo arte com uma vista panorâmica do porto do Rio. É como se, em sua mente, ele tivesse esmagado nas rochas abaixo a convencional caixa da galeria, e nos desafiado a enxergar arte e natureza como duas coisas iguais.

English: The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói %u2014 MAC) is situated in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and is one of the city%u2019s main landmarks.

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer with the assistance of structural engineer Bruno Contarini, who had worked with Niemeyer on earlier projects, the MAC-Niterói is 16 meters high; its cupola has a diameter of 50 meters with three floors. The museum projects itself over Boa Viagem (%u201CBon Voyage,%u201D %u201CGood Journey%u201D), the 817-square meter reflecting pool that surrounds the cylindrical base %u201Clike a flower,%u201D in the words of Niemeyer.

  • A wide access sloping ramp leads to a Hall of Expositions, which has a capacity for sixty people. Two doors lead to the viewing gallery, through which can be seen the Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, and Sugarloaf Mountain. The saucer-shaped modernist structure, which has been likened to a UFO, is set on a cliffside, at the bottom of which is a beach. In the film Oscar Niemeyer, an architect committed to his century (Marc Henri Wajnberg, 2000), Niemeyer is seen flying over Rio de Janeiro in a UFO, which then lands on the site, suggesting this as the origin of the museum.
