English: Location of this monument:
The Rameshwara temple of Ramanathapura is a part of a historic and large temple and Hindu monastery complex near the Kaveri river. Originally a Hoysala temple, it was destroyed in the Sultanate invasion. It was rebuilt and expanded during the Vijayanagara and Pallegar eras. The oldest layer of the complex is the soapstone Hoysala temple for Rameshvara (shown above). It consists of a mandapa, navaranga with nine squares, a star-shaped garbhagriya with much ornamentation. The Sukhanasi has the Hoysala emblem. The porch suffered much damage, and only two of the original pillars have survived. The pillars inside the navaranga are better preserved and are in the Hoysala style. Notable Hoysala artwork of this Ramesvara temple include Ganesha, Umamaheshvara, Bhairava, Surya, Kesava (Vishnu), and Durga Mahisasuramardini (Shakti). The temples and matha complex includes a Meenakshi temple (Shakti), Agastyesvara temple, a Hoysala-era Venugopala group of temples (Vishnu) and an Advaita Vedanta matha. These are not shown above. This is a JPEG format plan and architectural drawing of a historic Indian temple or monument. The relative scale and relative dimensions in this architectural drawing are close to the actual but neither exact nor complete. The plan illustrates the design and layout, but some intricate details or parts of the temple may not be shown. In cases where exact measurements were not feasible, the drawing uses best approximations and rounds the best measurements feasible. Note: Please do not overwrite this file.
