nd alamedas, its un-surpassed sea-views, its clean though narrow streets, its ancientarchitecture. The people here seem to appreciate its sea-views andpaseos; for on the roof (or azotea) of nearly every house is percheda little tower or belvedere ; and these little turrets break the outlineof the city as seen from the sea, and give a character to its archi-tecture. Climb the winding stairway of the Torre Vijia to its roof-top, and then feast your eyes upon the views presented on everyhand, — white seas of stone-walled houses, divided by narrow streets, with a thousand turrets dotting the surface. We cannot mention half the attractions of Cadiz (let the curiousreaders seek a guide-book), but the visitor should by all means as-cend to the Torre Vijia and look about him. We now recall howgloriously the sun went down that afternoon into the western sea, dart-ing his Parthian arrows at the marble citv from behind the barrierof a thunder-cloud with sombre buttresses and eolden battlements.

THE DEFEAT OF THE ARMADA. CADIZ, GIBRALTAR, AND MALAGA. 193 As Sol (for that is his name here) sent his last sheaf of goldenarrows at the tower, we pointed our camera at him and shot him onthe spot. It is a great solace, that camera, as well as a great trouble. We have secured some fascinating pictures with it, and have madesome most marvellous misses. The picture of Sol (if there be apicture) now rests in obscurity; but we hope soon, with the applica-tion of proper chemicals, to bring his countenance to the light ofhis own beams. Speaking of pictures, there are many oil-paintingshere in Cadiz, and enough Murillos to make the fortune of a smallgallery in the United States, could it but possess them. The Museumhas two or three of them, but the best are in the chapel of the ancientconvent of Santa Catalina. The finest one there is perhaps the San Antonio; but the one towhich most interest is attached is the large painting behind the altar, which the artist was at work upon when he receive
