ay, the escudo of Alonso VI.,who conquered Toledo in 1035, and in the mosque heard the firstmass after its capture. Before entering the city, with its narrow and winding .streets, wetook a general survey of its surroundings by wralking along theencircling alamcda to a point where the Tagus curves around. It isa pleasant walk outside the wall. To the right, you look down uponthe lower terrace, by the river side, where is situated the famousFabrica de Armas (or sword manufactory), the building only a hundredyears old; but here are made the Toledo blades, for which the cityhas been so long celebrated. It is about the only industry that hassurvived from ancient times, and it is said that the temper of theswords and sabres made here is still superior. But if one may judgefrom the samples of jack-knives offered here for sale, the water andthe sand of the Tagus nave lost some of their virtue. In a little shop of the town, in a dark and obscure court, we found TOLEDO, ON THE GOLDEN TAGUS. I27

BRIDGE OF SAN MARTIN, TOLEDO. some of the smiths at work on iron jewelry, for which also Toledohas a reputation. They seemed to be worthy and legitimate descend-ants of Tubal-Cain himself, whose industry and cunning they mayhave inherited direct, for aught we know to the contrary. They 128 RAMBLES IN SUNNY SPAIN. manufacture a kind of iron jewelry inlaid with gold, which has acertain beauty of its own, and which they sell at high prices. Still continuing around the city, beneath the hill on which the mainpart of it is built, we come in sight of the noble Bridge of San Martin, above which, in the river, are the remains of Moorish mills. Belowus are the Baths of Florinda, where, tradition states, the fair daughterof Count Julian was bathing when King Roderic saw her and becameenamoured of her beauty. Leaving the roaring Tagus behind us, andentering the gate of the city called the Puerta del Cambron (whichwas rebuilt three hundred years ago), we reach that famous convent-church of San Jua
