THE PALACE OF DOMITIAN (i)-He used the remains of Augustuss palace, destroyed by fire in thesecond year of the reign of Titus, filling in the chambers of the earlierbuildings with earth, so that they formed a solid foundation. Heembellished the portico, in which he took his airing, witli polishedstone, so that he might observe if any one approached him (Sueto-nius). The remains consist of the tablinium, or summer-parlour; thelaiarium, or chapel of the household gods; the bed-chamber where hewas assassinated ; the tricliniarium, or dining-room; the peristylium,or open court; nymphseum, or aquarium; the vometarium ; audi-torium ; and the crypto-porticoes connecting it with the other palaces. 6 82 KAMBLE I. ^^^\m O THE BASILICA (16).
