Theresidence for the senator was first erected on the top of the ruins ofthe Tabularium in 1389-1:394 by Pope Boniface IX., but this gaveplace to the present edifice. At the top of the passwas the Gate of Janus, the gate of the citadel, betrayed by Tarpeia.The ascent from the Forum, on our right, was the Clivus Capitolinus,a continuation of the Via Sacra. It is only at its termination thatthe present road is on the site of the ancient slope, where some ofthe pavement may still be seen. The gate which here gave accessto the arx was called the Gate of Saturn. On the right of the old museum some steps lead up to THE CHURCH OP ARA CCELI. This church is rendered famous as being the place where,on the 15th of October 1764, Gibbon sat musing amidst the ruinsof the Capitol, and conceived the idea of writing the Decline andFall of the Roman Empire. The church is the residence of the celebrated Sautissimo Bambino,carved out of a tree from the Mount of Olives, and painted by S.Luke. This image is highly decorated with jewellery, and has atwo-horse caiTiage at its disposal, with coachmen and footmen, whenit pays a visit to the sick.
