those we have passed. This great valley is a placefamous in Jewish history. It commences north ofJerusalem, and leads down past Lifta (Nephtoah)2 toa little village called Kolonia3 on the road beneath us.Thence by Ain Karim southwards to join the BetherValley, and by Kesla (the ancient Chesalonl), it runsdown to Zoreah and Eshtaol,5 and widens out into thegreat corn-valley of Sorek,6 and so past Ekron andJamia to the sea. Thus it was one of those passes bywhich the Philistines were able to penetrate into the heartof the Jewish mountains. It was down that valley thatSamuel drove the defeated host from Mizpeh, north of 1 1 Chron. ii. 52. 2 Joshua xv. 9, xviii. 15. 3 The name Motza is preserved here in a neighbouring ruin, and theTalmudic doctors tell us that Motza was a Roman colonia, or colony, aplace free from taxes and conferring Roman citizenship on those bornthere. 4 Joshua xv. 10. 5 Joshua xv. 33, xix. 41 ; Judges xiii. 25, xvi. 31, xviii. 2, 8, n;1 Chron. ii. 53. 6 Judges xvi. 4.

ii4 RAMBLES IN BIBLE LANDS Jerusalem, to Ebenezer. a place probably at the entranceof the hills.- In their flight they passed under Bethcar.which is not improbably the present Ain Karim. Alongthe stony bed of this great valley at our feet we maypicture to ourselves the nomadic host with their mail-cladchampions flying before the followers of the prophet,while far away on the white hills the Tabernacle wouldbe seen high on the ridge ot Mizpeh.2 From Kolonia, with its flowing stream irrigatingshadv and delightful orange groves, we begin the longascent of the third pass which leads to the top of theplateau, on the opposite ;eastern) end of which standsJerusalem. The city is now soon reached, but the flrstview of it, when thus approached by the Joppa road tromthe west, is disappointing, for on this side but little of itcan be seen, and even that little only when you havegot within a quarter of a mile of it.
