DescriptionRaleigh Banking & Trust Building, Fayetteville Street, Raleigh, NC (27224611357).jpg | The Raleigh Building and the Odd Fellows/Commerce Building are two historic high-rises in downtown Raleigh that are joined at the back of each respective structure, forming a single Chicago-style street wall along Hargett Street between Fayetteville Street and Salisbury Street. The Raleigh Building is the older of the two structures, originally constructed as a 3-story Neoclassical structure that housed the Raleigh Banking and Trust Company, which was constructed in 1913 with future plans to expand upwards, which was done in 1928-29. However, the original facade was removed in the late 1930s and replaced with a simpler Art Deco facade, to symbolize the new direction of the building under its new owners, as the bank had failed during the early years of the Great Depression. The Commerce Building was originally constructed in 1923-24 by the International Order of Odd Fellows, who had a meeting space in the building and rentable office space to support their organization economically. The Commerce Building also has a small parklet along Salisbury Street, which is an interesting guerrilla urban design feature. Today, these are among the most beautiful structures in the city center, and some of the city's most historic high-rises. |
