DescriptionRaksha Bandhan festival threads.jpg |
Jammu, August 2009 Girl shopping for Rakhi's on her brother for upcoming Raksha Bandhan festival in Jammu & Kashmir, North India. Raksha bandhan is an Indian festival that celebrates the love between sister and brother. It is also celebrated between any female and any male, regardless of age, to mark their sacred sister-brother like protective and respectful relationship. On that day, the woman does an aarti - a ritual signifying respect and love, then ties a thread on his wrist, followed by feeding each other with sweets. Raksha bandhan is a historic festival, prevalent among Hindus, Jains and Sikhs. Rakhi is a thread that a woman ties to a man (sister to a brother). They come in many colors, but safron, red and orange are most common. Sometimes above the thread are colorful decorative pieces. |
