Summary
[edit]DescriptionRaised footpath and retaining wall, Nottingham Canal - geograph.org.uk - 1198119.jpg |
English: Raised footpath and retaining wall, Nottingham Canal The canal follows the 60m contour for much of its length. Along the section in this square the farmland falls away quite dramatically on the towpath side. This stone and block wall is part of the retaining structure of the bank and the surface of the canal itself is about a foot (300mm) below the top. Built in 1796 for the transport of coal it was quite a feat of engineering. Here the footpath that follows the canal through Broxtowe District Council's linear nature reserve follows a short raised walkway. |
