Summary
[edit]DescriptionRailway terminus, Kyle of Lochalsh - geograph.org.uk - 1590978.jpg |
English: Railway terminus, Kyle of Lochalsh A view from the bridge in Station Road. The train at the platform had just arrived from Dingwall.
The 63 miles of railway from Dingwall to Kyle of Lochalsh was opened 2 November, 1897, although the initial section from Dingwall to Stromeferry was opened 19 August 1870. The final difficult section took so long to get approval to build because ultimately the engineers (and workers) had to construct 29 bridges, cut through 31 sections of solid rock at an average cost of £20,000 (UK pounds) per mile. In 1893 the Stromeferry to Kyle project began and took over 80 'navvies' nearly 4 years to complete. Friends of the Kyle Line website - http://www.kylerailway.co.uk/ . |
