Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Railway of the Dead. This is Cemetery Pales in Brookwood, a road running through the 500-acre Brookwood Cemetery. Opened in 1854, the cemetery was designed to overcome the problems caused by London's churchyards being full to bursting. Indeed, Brookwood was intended to take London's dead for the next 100 years. To link the cemetery to the capital the London Necropolis Company ran a train service from a special station near Waterloo directly into the cemetery. There were two stations in the cemetery - one for Anglicans in the southern part and one for non-conformists in the northern. The photograph shows where the railway crossed over the road between the two halves and into the southern part of the cemetery. It closed in the 1940s after the Luftwaffe destroyed the London terminus in an air raid.
